Plot Summary

Peter Parker has finally managed to piece together the once-broken parts of his life, maintaining a balance between his relationship with Mary-Jane and his responsibility as Spider-Man. But more challenges arise for our young hero. Peter's old friend Harry Obsourne has set out for revenge against Peter; taking up the mantle of his late father's persona as The New Goblin, and Peter must also capture Uncle Ben's real killer, Flint Marko, who has been transformed into his toughest foe yet, the Sandman. All hope seems lost when suddenly Peter's suit turns jet-black and greatly amplifies his powers. But it also begins to greatly amplify the much darker qualities of Peter's personality that he begins to lose himself to. Peter has to reach deep inside himself to free the compassionate hero he used to be if he is to ever conquer the darkness within and face not only his greatest enemies, but also...himself.

Goofs

  • Continuity: In the shots of when Peter (as the Black Spider-Man) meets Harry on Harry's balcony, Peter's hair can be seen changing positions between two shots.
  • Continuity: In the scene when Eddie Brock was holding his DSLR for the first time, it was a Nikon D40 with a 55-200mm lens. In the next shot he was holding a Nikon D40 with a 18-55mm kit lens instead.
  • Audio/visual unsynchronized: Mary Jane singing in the opening and closing of the film is badly lip synced.
  • Continuity: The message on Mary Jane's answering machine ends with her saying "beep" the first time Peter calls. The second time, it is missing this part of the message.
  • Continuity: During the news report where it looks as though Venom is about to kill Spider-Man, the reporter can be seen facing away from the TV camera looking up as she speaks, but the immediate next shot shows her in front of the camera looking right into it.
  • Continuity: Whenever Spidey removes his mask, his costume (red or black) is shown to have a turtleneck collar that goes up to the middle of his neck. But whenever his costume is shown underneath his clothes, the collar is much lower.
  • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Harry is looking down at Peter from the balcony when Mary Jane is singing in Broadway and Peter is singing along, Mary Jane sings one thing and Peter mouths another. However it's possible that Peter does not remember very well the song, and he mouthed what he thought was next.
  • Continuity: Beginning with the "Fever" scene in the jazz club, MJ's heels fluctuate between fairly high and almost flat a number of times during the time she's wearing the black/white outfit.
  • Audio/visual unsynchronized: In the scene where Peter Parker takes Gwen Stacy to the Jazz bar, you can clearly hear drums and cymbals when Peter is dancing, but the drummer in the background is seen tapping his drumsticks together.
  • Continuity: When Peter attends Mary Jane's opening performance and then takes her to the park, he's wearing a light blue shirt that changes from "button-down" collar style (unbuttoned -- you can see the buttons under the collar flaps) to "plain" collar and back to button-down (unbuttoned again, but you can't see the buttons this time).

Trivias

  • The release date for the film was set before Spider-Man 2 (2004) was even released.
  • At an estimated gross of $151M at the box-office, this movie holds the record for biggest single (opening) weekend of all time. Interestingly, the previous record holder, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006), took the record from Spider-Man 2 (2004).
  • The movie's $59.3M take (on its opening Friday) at the box-office was the biggest single day of all time. The previous record-holder was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006).
  • Sam and Ivan Raimi's original drafts were so long that at one point, the story broke into two films that might have been made back-to-back as parts 3 and 4 - a game plan that collapsed when screenwriter Alvin Sargent couldn't find a satisfying intermediate climax.
  • During the celebration scene the band plays an alternate rendition of the "Spider-Man" (1967) TV show theme while Spiderman ascends to the stage.
  • At the event where he is given the keys to the city, Spiderman shouts "Shazam" as he makes his entrance. This is the catchphrase of Captain Marvel in the DC comics, the main rival to the Marvel comic book franchise.
  • During Stan Lee's cameo in the film, he uses the catch phrase "'nuff said", which he used frequently in the comics to end short editor's notes inside the panels.
  • Shares the record for the fastest reach (2 days) of the $100M mark at the box-office with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
  • The name of the character who replaces MJ in the play is Andrea Rubin, Sam Raimi's sister.
  • The girl who gives her camera to Jonah J Jameson for $100 is actually Sam Raimi's daughter.
