Maxabout Review

Fresh and Engrossing in most parts. Recommended!

Sunday, August 09, 2009

This is Raj Kapoor’s Bobby with furtive sex and a baby thrown in for good measure. Otherwise the boy-meets-girl formula never seemed more homage-bound.Soft to the touch, but underpinned by a strong message on sex and the single parent, Teree Sang is a sweet and likable spin on premature parenthood.

First and foremost, TEREE SANG is not JUNO. The resemblance starts and ends with an adolescent getting pregnant. TEREE SANG is not KYA KEHNA either. TEREE SANG mirrors what's happening in society vividly. But, at the same time, it's not dark or disturbing, nor does it get preachy. Licensed in the sense that the film extends into a climax which gives a legal verdict on unwed maternity. However it gains its individual identity from its focus on teenage pregnancy over unmarried motherhood.

Teree SangThe movie has a young, adult feel and a few numbers are quite peppy as well. Young parents will have a lot to learn from this. Those with teenagers or with kids approaching their teens will benefit a lot, too.

Satish Kaushik’s direction is straight-and-sincere most of the way. The couple is given a non-judgemental treatment till the end when ‘judge’ Anupam Kher shows up with his verdict on teen pregnancy. Though the narration makes a bold statement on premature hormonal exuberance it doesn’t quite acquire the poignant heartwarming intimacy and humour of Jason Reitman’s Juno. Nor does young Sheena Sahabadi have Juno’s contagious premature wisdom. The girl looks clueless about the birds and the bees and the wanna-bes.

The best interludes in the film feature Ruslaan’s plebian parents played with spirited earthiness by Satish Kaushik and Sushmita Mukherjee . Their life in the crusty dusty Old Delhi lanes are authentically recreated. In contrast the female protagonist’s world is awkward and cheaply stylized.
What ironically saves the day is the lack of chemistry between the lead pair. Painfully young and awkward Ruslaan Mumtaz and Sheena epitomise the premature householders grappling with house bills and pregnancy tests at a time when they should be at best Teree Sangworried about which party to attend next.
Kaushik gives the pair a fair chance to have their say. He isn’t endorsing teenage pregnancy. But if it happens you don’t need to run into the nearest abortion clinic. Own up and be a man. That’s the message. Take it or leave it.

Satish Kaushik steps into a new territory with TEREE SANG and throws a pleasant surprise at viewers. The entire first half is so real, so identifiable and the execution of the subject is so interesting that you get instantly drawn into Kabir and Maahi's worlds. The passionate kiss that they share, which leads to a sexual encounter, is also maturely depicted on screen by the director. But it's the second hour that's problematic. It becomes yet another version of BOBBY and LOVE STORY, with the kids eloping and the warring parents thirsting for each other's blood. These portions don't appeal primarily because too much seems to happen too soon. A roof over the head, a spacious mansion with all amenities and necessities in place, an instant job et al... all this in a matter of a few days in a new township seems so unreal.

TEREE SANG is easily amongst Satish Kaushik's most accomplished works. Sachin-Jigar's music has that freshness that this subject demands and at least two songs deserve a strong mention, especially 'More Saiyyan'. The camerawork is vibrant at places.
Nevertheless, it is an honest attempt at addressing a very serious issue.

Ruslaan underplays his part beautifully. The best part is, it's not one of Teree Sangthose conventional roles that show the hero flexing his muscles or beating up 10 people at the same time. He enacts the boy next door part with complete understanding. Sheena is a surprise. Dew-fresh and adorable, the debutante looks perfect for the part. Her confidence and performance, both are wonderful.
Rajat Kapoor is excellent. Neena Gupta is natural. Satish Kaushik delivers a winning performance. The viewers will love him. Sushmita Mukherjee Bundela is first-rate. Anupam Kher, in a brief role, is perfect.

Parents, this one is for you. Take your teenagers along.
