Plot

Tension

Warren Quimby, mad about his beautiful but unfaithful wife, Claire, plans to murder her lover, Barney Deager. He creates another identity so that when he commits the murder he will not be suspected.

He is painstakingly precise in every detail of his plan, even to becoming friendly with Deager's neighbor, Mary Chandler. But when Warren, as Paul, falls in love with Mary, he is appalled that the could have even comprehending his planned action. And, then, Deager is actually murdered.

  • Revealing mistakes: When Cyd Charisse accidentally snaps a picture of Richard Baseheart as "Paul Sothern", it is day time. However, the resulting picture she hands over to the missing persons bureau was obviously taken at night.
  • Continuity: In the first scene with Claire Quimby (Audrey Totter) we can see a "Dad's Root Beer" sign on the wall next to her. In the beginning of the scene the word "Beer" is blacked out, but half way through the scene it miraculously reappears.
  • Revealing mistakes: Exterior of the street outside drugstore (shot on actual location) do not match with views of same street as seen through window of drugstore interior (a set).
  • Continuity: When detectives enter the movie theater to question manager, the posters are different from the ones they pass on way out.

  • Audrey Totter was promised top-billing by the Producer, but when Richard Basehart was borrowed from Fox to play her husband, the studio demanded that he get top billing as a condition of the agreement.
  • When Richard Basehart's character of Quimby decides to create another identity for himself, he gets the idea for the name Sothern when he sees a movie fan magazine with Ann Sothern on the cover. "Tension" producer Robert Sisk was then in the process of prepping Shadow on the Wall (1950) to star Miss Sothern in the last film of her long-term MGM contract.
  • "Tension" was shooting at about the same time in 1949 as Side Street (1950), and the latter film utilizes the pharmacy set and its phone booth to allow Farley Granger to make a phone call.
  • Portions of AndrĂ© Previn's music score were recycled as title theme for same studio's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958).
