In the year 1977 the Indian film industry has many popular superstars which includes: Rajesh Kapoor, Shanti Priya, Rajesh Khanna just to name a few. Om Prakash is also a junior artist there and has dreams to become a hero overnight. Oms mother, Bela Makhija, inspires and encourages her son to become a success.

He gets to meet Shanti Priya one day and finds out that she is very popular, after a few misunderstandings, Om finally falls in love with Shanti, but is unable to express it to her. He gets to attend her first film Dreamy girl by masquerading as the actor Manoj Kumar. He also saves her in a filming episode from an uncontrollable fire and both became deep friends. Om asks her if she will meet him for one evening and she agrees.

Om is ecstatic and plans a wonderful evening for her - using props and a film set and several backgrounds in a studio to woo her. And she finally attends but under the pretext of a friend. The following day, Om tries to talk to Shanti on the sets of a film but she looks very preoccupied. He follows her into a make up room, is asked to alight form there but still proceed on, he wanted to talk to her but ends up overhearing an argument with top producer Mukesh Mehra and learns that she is marriage to him and is expecting his child, Om is shocked, and ends up leaving from there, heartbroken.

One night, Om notices Mukesh escorting Shanti to the set of Om Shanti Om. Suddenly Om witnessed the place caught afire with Shanti trapped inside. Om trys to save Shanti, but is trapped and severely beaten by Mukeshs guard. In that set Mukesh happens to corned Shanti and mysteriously killing her.

Om is suddenly rescued by Rajesh Kapoor, who is rushing his pregnant wife to a hospital. Rajesh takes Om to the hospital as well, but Om is pronounced dead. Moments later, Rajesh Kapoors son is born, and now in 2007 he is a popular star and is now known as Om Kapoor. It appears as if Om Prakash has reincarnated and is out now to look for his love and average her sufferings, taking revenge from Mukesh Mehra.

Goofs

• After Mukhesh Mehra locks up Shanthi in the burning studio of OSO while kissing her good bye, his hands change. From inside it’s the right hand, but from outside shot its the left hand.
• In the scene where Om and his mother are looking at the moon through the window, the camera starts rising. In the background, you can see a crew member standing behind Khan and Kher, stepping back to avoid getting into the field.
• Near the end of the movie, when the Chandelier falls on Mukesh (Arjun Rampal), you see the entire Chandelier is broken, yet in the next scene you see the Chandelier still active up to Om's (Shahrukh Khan's) height, with him looking through it to see the ghost of Shantipriya.
• When Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal) is hit by the falling Chandelier, he falls in front of the crowd. Later on, when the crowd has disappeared, the chandelier is miraculously fixed by the time Mukesh Mehra regains consciousness.

Trivias

• Farah Khan was originally going to make a film called "Happy New Year." The film was to be a romantic comedy set at New Year's Eve and would star 'Shah Rukh Khan' , Juhi Chawla, Raveena Tandon, Amitabh Bachchan, Manisha Koirala, Sanjay Dutt, Zayed Khan and Priyanka Chopra. However, due to the actors' scheduling conflicts, she scrapped the idea and chose another concept based on/inspired from various 1970s films.
• Composer A.R. Rahman was meant to compose the songs for this film, but had to decline due to other commitments.
• The title of the film is taken from a 1970s-style disco song in Subhash Ghai's Karz (1980). Ghai himself makes an appearance in this film.
• Shahrukh Khan's character Om Prakash Makhija is named after 1970s actor Om Prakash.
• Shanti's film is called "Dreamy Girl," after Dream Girl (1977), the 1970s hit that took Hema Malini to super-stardom (and also landed her with her iconic nickname of Dream Girl).
• The yesteryear cars used in the film originally belonged to Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini.
• The song "Dard-E-Disco" was originally to be shot with only Shakira after Farah Khan choreographed her performance at the 2006 VMA's, but her upcoming concert tours rendered her unavailable. Then Farah Khan recalled a promise 'Shah Rukh Khan' made to her when shooting the song "Jiye Jale" in Dil Se.. (1998): that if he would show his abs for another film, it would be for a film she was directing. She called upon his promise, and he shot for the song.
• Shah Rukh worked out for 3 months prior for the song Dard-e-disco.
• It was director Farah Khan's desire to bring Sanjay Dutt, 'Shah Rukh Khan' , Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan together on screen for the first time ever. However, Aamir Khan was unable to shoot for the film, since he was busy shooting his film Taare Zameen Par (2007).
• Actress Deepika Padukone's first Hindi film.
