Plot Summary
Munnabhai M.B.B.S.
Murli Prasad Sharma a.k.a Munna (Sanjay Dutt), is the big-time local thug and has almost everyone working for him. However, Munna has got his parents believing that he is a doctor, and whenever they visit, he has his home turned into a hospital, and his mates acting as patients and doctors. But when Munna's father visits this time, he wants Munna to marry a childhood friend, who is now a female doctor - Chinki.
But Chinki's father is aware that Munna is not a doctor and is a goon, so he bust Munna in front of his parents. Munna's Father disowns Munna and Munna challenges himself to become a doctor to show his father he is capable of it. Munna attends medical school, which is run by Chinkis father. Munna wants to irritate Chinki's Father. Will Munna ever become a doctor and marry Chinki? Will Munna father ever own him again? Can the local Thug become anything more than a local thug.
Hari Prasad Sharma (Sunil Dutt) and his wife Parvati (Rohini Hattangadi) come from their village to visit their doctor son, Dr. Murli (Sanjay Dutt) in Bombay, who is the head of a charitable hospital. They are greeted with fanfare and are given a tour of the hospital. Hari and Parvati decide that since Murli is well settled, he should get married. So they arrange a marriage with Dr. J.C. Asthana's (Boman Irani) daughter, Suman "Chinki" Asthana (Gracy Singh), also a doctor. Goofs

- Continuity: When Dr. Asthana barges angrily in the ward after the song "Seekh Lay", Zaheer, the patient hugs him to cool him down. During these shots Zaheer's head is alternatively towards the left or facing Dr. Asthana.
- Crew or equipment visible: At the beginning of the movie, when car starts driving, camera is visible on the left side of the hood and is seen several times during chase.
- Continuity: In the scene where a surgeon is demonstrating the dissection of a cadaver and Munna tries to look over his shoulder there is a difference in position of actors in the frontal and side-on shots. Swamy who is seen immediately next to the surgeon on the surgeon's right in the frontal shot, is seen trying to pop his head over the crowd directly behind (and at some distance from) the surgeon in the side-on shot alternatively.

- In the scene where the senior students are making the junior students dance naked, the song in the background is "Ishq Samundar" from the movie Kaante (2002) which also stars Sanjay Dutt.
- There are several pigeons in the film. This is a reference to the classic gangster film Parinda (1989), which was directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra .
- The semicircular hall had 15-feet windows, which had to be broken open for the lighting to be right.
- Before Sanjay Dutt was cast, Vivek Oberoi was considered for the title role.
- Shah Rukh Khan was the first choice for the role of Munnabhai, but was forced to turn it down when he had back problems. But when Shahrukh Khan was part of the film, he helped out with the script. The producers credited him for his consulting inputs.
- Sanjay Dutt reduced his weight for the role.
- This was Sunil Dutt 's first film appearance in 16 years.
- This being Rajkumar Hirani 's directorial debut, he wanted everything to be authentic. For the dissection room scenes, he considered shooting in a real dissection room, using real dead bodies. With due respect for everyone's feelings, the scene was shot on a set with a real person doubling up as a cadaver.
- Rani Mukherjee was very keen on this film and had signed on for the role of Chinky, but she couldn't do the film due to date problems. Then Tabu was brought in, but she soon dropped out. Finally, the role went to Gracy Singh.
- The original choice for Circuit was Makrand Deshpande.
