Plot Summary
Live Free or Die Hard
NYPD Detective John McClane lives in Brooklyn, and he's now divorced from Holly Gennero, who lives in San Francisco. John has faced some brutal terrorists in his career, but now, he's about to face what may be his most dangerous enemy yet. John, who occasionally does jobs for the United States Department of Homeland Security, receives a call to bring in a hacker named Matt Farrell, because there has been a breach in an FBI computer system.
Farrell is one of the many hackers who are suspected in the attack, and all known hackers are to be questioned. But after John gets to Matt's apartment, a group of men show up and try to kill John and Matt, who barely escape with their lives. As it turns out, a group of terrorists led by Thomas Gabriel are systematically shutting down the United States computer infrastructure. They crash the stock market, crippling America's economy.
It turns out that Matt knows enough about hacking to know exactly how Gabriel is shutting down the USA. Gabriel, a disgraced former Department of Defense employee, plans to bring the country to its knees, but he doesn't count on John and Matt figuring out what's going on. Gabriel wants John and Matt out of the way, and for John, the situation becomes personal when an enraged Gabriel kidnaps John's daughter Lucy, who is a student at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Gabriel may think he now has the upper hand on John, but he has no idea how far John is willing to go to rescue Lucy.
Goofs
Live Free or Die Hard
- Factual errors: The "police radio" in McClane's NYPD car (and a few other official vehicles in the film) was actually a ham radio. It was an ADI model AR-147 FM transceiver. It was tuned to 144.330 MHz which is an amateur radio frequency in the two meter band. Except for extraordinary emergencies, that band is not used for law enforcement communication.
- Crew or equipment visible: Right before McClane reaches the door of the 18-wheeler, the shadow of a camera can be seen on the side of the truck.
- Revealing mistakes: After McClane shoots the driver of the truck, it sounds like the truck is shifting a gear up. Since the driver has been shot, there would be no one to shift gears. Furthermore, immediately after McClane gets in, it's shifting up again, although McClane is not yet driving the truck.
- Factual errors: F-35: While seeing some HUD shots it's definitely stated that the MASTER-ARM is set switched to SIM, which means the F-35 could never fire a single missile or bullet.
- Continuity: During the car chase, McClane's rig's left front end receives major damage when crashing into the smaller cars. In the next shot, the front bumper and the rest of the rig has no damage.
- Factual errors: As McClane is driving the rig during the chase at the end, the truck gets tilted to the starboard side-wheels. In the next shot McClane is shown turning the steering wheel rapidly to the left. Doing so would have caused the rig to completely fall over to the right. Instead, the truck drops back on its all wheels, which would have only happened should John have turned the steering wheel to the right.
- Factual errors: After the hackers reroute the gas lines, an error message pops up on the screen that reads "CONNECTION FAILD" instead of "failed"
- Factual errors: The frequency seen programmed into the NYPD unmarked cruiser police radio is 144.33 mhz. That frequency is assigned by the FCC to ham radio operators.
- Continuity: During the initial scene with Lucy after she climbs out of her "boyfriend's" car, her ponytail repeatedly switches from being draped across her shoulder, to hanging down behind her head.
- Errors in geography: The aerial shots at the end of the movie are supposed to be of the Baltimore area. Mountains are clearly visible in the background. There are no mountains within visual distance of Baltimore.

Live Free or Die Hard
- While in early development, the movie had been given the subtitle "Tears of the Sun". Bruce Willis told the studio he would commit to a Die Hard 4 if he could use the title for Tears of the Sun (2003).
- The French title translates as "Die Hard 4.0: Return to Hell".
- Jessica Simpson auditioned unsuccessfully for the role of 'Bruce Willis (I)' 's daughter. She can be seen on the way to the audition and coming out of the audition in the "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica" (2003) episode "Mismatched Threesome".
- The movie's title, "Live Free or Die Hard", is a reference to New Hampshire's State Motto "Live Free or Die".
- Bruce Willis's stunt double, Larry Rippenkroeger, was seriously injured when he fell 25 feet to the pavement. He suffered broken bones in his face and fractures in both wrists. Production was temporarily shut down. Willis picked up the tab at area hotels for Larry's parents and visited him a number of times at the hospital. Larry also doubles for James Caan in his TV series, Vegas. Caan came and visited Larry in the hospital and joked around for over an hour. Larry told his parents he was glad when Caan left because he hurt so bad laughing at Caan's jokes.
- Justin Timberlake was in talks to play John McClane's son.
- (From the trailer) One of Bruce Willis' lines is "All you have to do is go pick up a kid from Jersey and drive him down to DC, how hard can it be?!" This is a nod to another Willis film '16 Blocks' (2006) where the film is based on the same principle.
- This is the first Die Hard movie to be written as a Die Hard film from the start. Die Hard was originally to be the sequel to Commando and adapted from the novel Nothing Lasts for Ever. Die Hard 2 was based on a novel called 58 Minutes, and Die Hard with a Vengenance started off as a script for the third Lethal Weapon.
- Prints were sent out to UK cinemas under the fake name "New Hampshire" - a reference to the state's "Live Free or Die" motto and the movie's original title - in spite of the title being changed to "Die Hard 4.0" in European territories.
- This film addresses the apparent continuity error in earlier installments - McClane is afraid of flying in the first two films, but not the third. Here, he explains that he took flying lessons in order to "face his fears."
