Plot Summary

Bruno

Borat trickster Sacha Baron Cohen returns to the big screen to offer yet another stinging dose of sociopolitical satire in this comedy that finds him assuming the persona of gay fashionmonger Bruno, the self-proclaimed "voice of Austrian youth TV."

Originally conceived as part of Cohen's cult television series Da Ali G Show, the character of Bruno offered a cleverly costumed Cohen the opportunity to highlight the absurdities of the fashion industry by interviewing unsuspecting fashion icons and other haute couture hangers-on.

Maxabout Review

'Bruno' is no 'Borat'. Gross, offensive, pushes the boundaries of bad taste to the limit.. .

Bruno is a collection of real life sketches (some feeling a little false and staged in places it must be said) as Sacha Baron Cohen's alter ego pushes it as far as he can go while interacting with the "real people."

Bruno is superficially like Borat, in which real folks co-star alongside the main event, and like Borat, real people are bewildered, astonished and experience drop jaw at regular stages, as this super-dork bounces around wildly irritating the shit out of everyone he comes accross.

Scenes in Bruno will of course begin and end without showing the entire interaction between the people on display. You might argue even further that a person’s behavior on one day is not necessarily indicative of their behavior at all times.

Bruno tries all stunts from adopting a baby hollywood style, to trying to settle the middle east fury, all in the name of making himself known. When he finally reaches his dead end, he decides it is infact his own utter gayness thats holding his career back from taking off.

Throughout, Cohen is almost heroically reckless with regard to his own personal safety. In one scene, he is chased down the street by a crowd of people in the Middle East after dressing like a Hassidic Jew in hot pants.

The comedian has obviously come away unscathed from all of these incidents, although producer Dan Mazer says Cohen was arrested in three continents while making the film and saw "some things no heterosexual male should ever have to see".
Bruno pushes the boundaries further than Borat ever did.

The most shocking part of the film though comes from the public.
Once again it's a real eye opener to see what people will do when the spotlight's turned on them - witness how far American parents will go to get their babies a job in ad; how uneducated some of those in the charity business are and how bigoted some religious people can be.

With Bruno, we can once again view the mastery of Cohen’s work. His Borat was brilliant to say but the least. Though it failed to be uniform in its aim, Bruno’s adventure in America is pretty more decisive and certainly launches itself on American pseudo-beliefs. Look out for Sacha’s interview with Harrison Ford, his abduction mishaps and pursuance by a Middle East terrorist group for his attires. These events are nothing short of absolute cinematic treats.

It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea and if you are easily shocked this certainly won't be for you, but some will find it outrageously hilarious.

  • In October 2006, entertainment blog website Defamer.com jokingly reported the title would be "Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt". Numerous websites around the world - including IMDb - reported this to be the actual working title.
  • Originally got a NC-17 rating from the MPAA, but after Sacha Baron Cohen re-edited it it received an R.
  • Sacha Baron Cohen worked out, shaved all of his body hair and got his hair done in order to be Bruno.
  • A scene which played a prank on La Toya Jackson was hastily cut from the theatrical release due to the then-raging public outcry over the unexpected death at age 50 of Michael Jackson.
